About Us |
The Meteorology Team operates a meteorological monitoring program
that is part of the
Meteorology and Air Quality (MAQ) Group within the
Environmental
Stewardship Division (ENV). The program, which is
required by U.S. Department of Energy orders in support of
Laboratory operations and emergency preparedness, is described in
the Meteorological
Monitoring Program. The Weather Machine provides a web
interface for customers to access data products and archives created
and maintained by the Meteorology Team.
History of the Weather Machine:
At the suggestion of Lee Ankeny, the original Gopher version
of the Weather Machine was set up in 1993. This version provided the first real-time access to data measured by the
local meteorological tower system operated by Bill Olsen. The http version, with a revised home page,
was established in 1995. In 1996 Darrell Holt and Lee added the data access
capability, whereby archived weather measurements can be download directly via
http data request forms.
In 2003, Jeremy Rishel completely redesigned the front-end architecture
of the Weather Machine to make the site more dynamic and interactive. At the same time, several new features were
added to the site, such as the Daily Weather Almanac, real-time SODAR
measurements, and weather-data request forms for the FARSITE fire model. This new version of the website, which is
coded in Active Server Pages (ASP), uses the latest Web Service technology to seamlessly
integrate National Weather Service (NWS) forecast data with data measured by
the LANL Meteorology Program.
